  10.        This release note describes patch SG0000247 to IRIX 5.2

  14.        This patch contains a bug fix for all platforms.

  18.        This patch contains a bug fixed strip(1) for machines with
  19.        the Development Option.  Installing it on other machines is
  20.        harmless but generally useless.

  24.        This patch contains fixes for the following bugs in IRIX
  25.        5.2.  Bug numbers from Silicon Graphics bug tracking system
  26.        are included for reference.

  28.           +o The strip(1) program failed to notice that information
  29.             in the line table was placed incorrectly by 5.2 ld(1)
  30.             and as a result the line table was not stripped out.
  31.             This was incident/bug number 249682.
  32.  
  33.             Leaving the line table in place did not cause incorrect
  34.             execution but it did waste disk space (the line table
  35.             could not be found or used by any program, so leaving
  36.             it served no purpose).
  37.  
  38.             This new version of strip fixes the problem by ensuring
  39.             that the strip program does indeed strip the entire
  40.             debugging-information (the .mdebug section) including
  41.             the line table.
  42.  
  43.             The amount of disk space saved by using this new
  44.             version of strip is typically 5% of the space of the
  45.             stripped object.
  46.  
  47.             It is quite useless to try to use this on an already-
  48.             stripped object:  wasted line table space in those
  49.             cannot be recovered.

  76.        Because you want to install patches for only the problems
  77.        you have encountered, patch software is not installed by
  78.        default. After reading the descriptions of the bugs fixed in
  79.        this patch, determine the patches that meet your specific
  80.        needs.

  82.        Patch software is installed like any other Silicon Graphics
  83.        software product.  Follow the instructions in your _I_R_I_S
  84.        _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e to bring up the miniroot form of
  85.        the software installation tools.

  87.        Follow these steps to select a patch for installation:

  89.          1.  At the Inst>prompt, type

  101.          4.  You may find that two patches have been marked as
  102.              incompatible.  If this occurs, you must deselect one
  103.              of the patches.

  109.          5.  After completing the installation process, exit the
  110.              _i_n_s_t program by typing

  115.        To remove a patch, use the _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e command as you
  116.        would for any other software subsystem.  The removal process
  117.        reinstates the original version of software unless you have
  118.        specifically removed the patch history from your system.
